Dylan sbarca in America… e durante il tragitto viene preso da forti conati di vomito. Ve lo ricordate l’albo Cagliostro!? Questa volta Dylan non va a trovare la sua amica strega Kim, ma è nella patria dei padri pellegrini per il film a lui dedicato.

Dylan Dog – Dead of Night, questo è il titolo originale, è sbarcato il 29 aprile nelle sale americane. Siamo in attesa di sapere quanto incasserà, perché ciò vorrebbe dire la riuscita o la rinuncia al progetto di farne dei seguiti.
Il Box Office ci darà il suo responso. Nel frattempo però possiamo leggere le recensioni al film.
Iniziamo da un famoso giornale.

Il Los Angeles Times paragona la produzione di questo film alla serie televisiva Buffy the vampire slayer. Felice che in America questo cult degli anni ’90 sia ancora ricordato, non credo che fosse un complimento. Il paragone, infatti, è dovuto al make-up gommoso e posticcio dei vari vampiri e mostri del film, niente a che fare con i moderni effetti speciali.
Il L. A. Times conclude dicendo che i fan del genere horror possono evitare di perdere tempo con questo film.

“Simply put, fans of bloodsucking, claw-swiping, flesh-rotting entertainment have enough going on in pop culture without needing to waste their time with “Dylan Dog: Dead of Night.”

Anche l’Orlando Sentinel (voto 1/5) ci va giù pesante: il trucco e gli effetti speciali sono “poco interessanti” e già sorpassati da molti film dello stesso genere. Sam huntington è quasi sempre fuori ruolo e la bionda Anita Briem non è niente di più che un condimento. Brandon Routh, invece, si trova a suo agio più nelle piccole parti.

Routh isn’t, and “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” director Kevin Munroe isn’t the one to give it to him. It’s more years back in supporting roles for the one-off Superman. He acquitted himself far better in “Scott Pilgrim vs. The World” and even “Zack and Miri Make a Porno,” where he didn’t have to do the heavy lifting. In smaller parts, his career doesn’t wear the label “No pulse, no problem.”

Il sito 411mania.com attribuisce il flop artistico di questo film al miscasting del personaggio principale. In poche parole Brandon Routh non è stato all’altezza  del suo ruolo.

Routh doesn’t have the depth, or comedic timing, to pull off a character like this, especially since the script by Thomas Dean Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer is constantly changing tone and style. One minute it’s a comedy. Then it’s horror. Then it’s noir. It’s great if you pull it all together and it works. The problem is that none of it works here and you yearn to watch other movies that do it better. The comedy is inconsistent, with most of the jokes and one-liners either cringe-inducing in their delivery or simply falling flat. The noir is not nearly dark enough and the drama not compelling. It’s hard to take the plot seriously, when the film itself doesn’t most of the time. The action is flat, with most of the end sequences involving Dylan and Vargas being especially tedious and unimaginative. And the horror isn’t scary. It just doesn’t go far enough in any aspect, and subsequently fails at almost all of it.

Anche in questo caso fioccano i paragoni con prodotti del passato, tra cui la ormai inossidabile Buffy (di cui tra l’altro si vocifera una nuova versione cinematografica).  Il film riceve un voto di 4.5/10

Il titolo dell’articolo del sito Examiner.com dice tutto: “Dylan Dog: Dead of night, dove gli zombie sono stati la parte migliore”.
E’ inutile dire che anche l’autore di questo articolo, Jess D’Arbonne, lo paragona a Buffy, ma stavolta non in senso negativo: infatti afferma che questo film potrebbe essere un buon pilot per una grande serie televisiva.  Il voto stavolta è sufficiente (3/5).

Il sito Screencrave afferma invece che è difficile consigliare questo film che, nella migliore delle ipotesi, non lascia niente. Potrebbe avere successo se mandato in onda via cavo di notte e con minori aspettative. Sicuramente, afferma l’articolista, la mediocrità è dovuta al budget scarso. Voto 5.5/10.

It’s hard to recommend a film that is – at best – relatively painless, but it’s also hard for me to beat up on a film that is this small. Dylan Dog: Dead of Night is the sort of film that when viewed on cable late at night is probably better than expected, but you need to have low expectations to appreciate the end product. Because of the murder mystery aspects of the film, I was able to find things to like about it, but it’s also the sort of film where had the filmmakers had a little more money, it might be a solid three star fun ride. As it is, it’s not terrible.

Infine, l’Hollywood reporter giudica il film per quello che è: un film a basso budget dove scarseggiano le vere emozioni e il make-up e gli effetti speciali sono così “goffi” da sembrare che siano stati comprati nel negozio di Halloween più vicino:

But genuine thrills are in short supply, with cheesy special effects, awkwardly staged battles and monster get-ups that look like they were rented from the nearest Halloween shop giving the production a cheap, direct-to-DVD feel.
